How to take care of cut carnation

Carnation is the most favored flower in the world, which comes after roses. Name carnation is derived from Dianthus caryophyllus in latin. In Ancient Greek, it was called as divine ("dios") and flower ("anthos"). Carnations are mainly divided into two varieties, as spray (multiple stems) or standard (single stem). It is also much desired flower, thanks to its delicate smell and long duration vase life. Wide range of colors are available for both variety in the market.

Carnations can last approximately 21-25 days without fading. To make last longer, here are the few easy tips;

  • put fresh cut flower into a vase filled with water immediately,

  • be aware that water level should be maximum 2-3 inch,

  • change the water in vase in every 2-3 days,

  • cut the end of stem in 45 degree slant to make sure it sucking up the water efficiently,

  • once it start to get rotten from bottoms, trim the ends of the flower in every week,

  • clean the bottom leaves to prevent becoming rotten,

  • you can also use special nourishing powders soluted in water. This will even extend the vase life more.
